Thursday September 9th, Meet stone sculpture artists Larry Trask, Brent Fellner and Lise Olson

Larry Trask has been a full time sculptor of stone for 12 years. His carvings can be found in galleries across the prairies and public and private collections around the world.

“My blend of realism and impressionism uses the stones natural shapes and textures along with finely finished areas to entice the viewer to touch. I want the composition to project character, the feeling of movement and attitude.“

Brent Fellner has said part of the challenge and fun of carving is not only deciding what to carve, but how to approach each piece of stone and reveal its character. Brent studied sculpture with Les Potter at the University of Saskatchewan. Brent’s work has been exhibited in many different venues in Saskatchewan and Alberta and is in private collections throughout both provinces. He was artist in residence at Stegner House in Eastend Sk. in 2007 and 2008. Brent’s work is primarily representational with a spiritual feel to it. He works mostly with soapstone, alabaster and chlorite, and he has recently started carving wood as well. He has been seen carving outdoors in -25 weather and while he isn’t sentimental about where he carves he does have a small studio in his backyard to keep him warm in the winter. Brent’s creativity is shaped mainly by his belief system and by the community around him.

Lise Olson was born and raised in the Peace River country of Northern Alberta. Coming from French Canadian roots, she has an appreciation for the rich cultural and lingual diversity in Canada. Her mother, Jacqueline Lambert came west from Quebec while her father, Roland Gaboury came to Alberta from Manitoba. Lise has only recently become aware of her First Nations heritage ties that originate from both her mother and father. Her father was a descendent of Anne-Marie Gaboury, the first white woman to come west, and Louis Riel’s grandmother.

Lise approaches her carving with enthusiasm, passion and dedication. These are qualities that she brings to everything she does. She has always enjoyed working with her hands through baking, sewing and crafting. Showing meticulous attention to detail, she experiences joy in seeing the finished piece. Stone carving has given her a ‘voice’ to express those things that she has long felt within. It is her pleasure to share her feelings through the voices of ‘Living Stones’.

This Thursday, August 12th from 6pm-8pm meet Clay artist Puck Janes at Traditions Handcraft Gallery, 2714 13th Avenue Regina

Rainbow Field

Puck Janes is a professional potter and clay artist who produces carved porcelain and sculptural ceramic landscapes in her Saskatoon studio.

“I have lived in Vancouver and Calgary, with the ocean and the mountains, but after living in Saskatchewan I wanted to express the subtle beauty of the prairie. My ceramic wall pieces and sculptures focus on farmed prairie lands, living skies, the change of seasons and the play of light over a day.”

I use a pallette of unusual glazes to decorate my handbuilt prairie landscape wall and sculptural “box” scapes. These glazes reflect the prairie: rough like the earth, glassy like the sloughs – full of subtle and intense colour. I have developed my glazes over many years of testing and use. My father was a mineral geologist and he was always showing his children the weird and wonderful world of minerals, crystals and metallics. This has been my reference for my work with clay and glazes.”

She holds a B.A. from the University of Saskatchewan and an Applied Arts Diploma from SIAST, the Saskatchewan Institute for Applied Science and Technology.

The 2nd in Traditions’ “Meet the Artist” Series is Regina Ceramics Artist, Anne McLellan

Her exhibit “Layers” will be on display at the gallery from June 9 – July 3

The Opening Reception and Artist Talk is Thursday, June 10 from 6pm – 8pm

Iris Bowl

Anne was recently one of only two visual artist finalists for the 2010 Mayor’s Arts & Business Awards in Regina, for the “Living the Arts” category.

Anne’s beautiful Majolica works are highly sought after and collected. Majolica is a form of glaze decoration where the surface is first covered in an opaque white glaze. Originally, Italian majolica developed into a distinctive narrative form of decoration, where artists would paint scenes of contemporary life or episodes from myth and legend onto the surface of the clay. Anne uses the white surface to express her impressions of the natural world in “snippets” of memory. Her illustrations feature colourful patterns in florals, fish and birds.

Since 1991 Anne has been selling her craft full time out of her studio Anne’s Pottery, and is represented by Traditions Handcraft Gallery and Rumours in Regina, The Mendel Art Gallery Shop in Saskatoon and Handwave Gallery in Meacham. She has recently exhibited her work at Joe Moran Gallery in Regina. Anne’s pieces have been commissioned by local organizations such as the Regina Progress Club, S.U.N. and the Saskatchewan Federation of Labour.

2 birds

In addition to producing and selling her own artwork, Anne is incredibly proactive about involving herself in the Regina arts community. Currently, Anne works at Traditions Handcraft Gallery and teaches craft to students with the Public School Board’s CREATE program. Anne has organized education, arts and gallery programs at the Regina Plains Museum, the MacKenzie Art Gallery, the Saskatchewan Craft Council, the Neil Balkwill Centre, the Cathedral Village Arts Festival and the University of Regina.
